MOMENT OF ENCOUNTER DEVOTIONAL

By Prophet Dr. Abiodun Adesida

Topic: KASONGO CHRISTIAN

When Spiritual Confidence Becomes Spiritual Carelessness

Anchor Text:

«“Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.” — Proverbs 16:18»

Dearly Beloved,

There is a kind of Christianity I call “Kasongo Christianity.”

Mr. Kasongo is like the overconfident warthog that behaves as though the entire forest has signed a peace treaty with him. He walks around with confidence, convinced that his legs are fast enough to settle every argument with a predator.

When danger appears, Kasongo seems to say:

“Catch me if you can!”

Unfortunately, the lion does not argue theology. It simply gives chase.

Sometimes, what Kasongo calls confidence is actually carelessness wearing perfume.

And spiritually, some Christians behave exactly like that.

They have fasted for forty days, so apparently Satan should now be afraid to enter their street.

They prayed from 12 midnight until 5 a.m., so nobody can advise them again.

They have attended seven mountains, twelve vigils and enough conventions to qualify for a spiritual frequent-flyer card.

Ask them, “Brother, have you prayed about this decision?”

They reply, “Do you know how many hours I pray every day?”

Ah! Kasongo has entered the building.

Prayer is powerful. Fasting is biblical. Holiness is compulsory. Spiritual discipline is essential. But none of these makes us independent of God.

The moment your spiritual achievement makes you feel too strong to fall, you may already be standing dangerously close to the edge.

Paul warned:

«“Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.” — 1 Corinthians 10:12»

RECKLESSNESS IS NOT FAITH

There is a difference between faith and presumption.

Faith says, “God is able; therefore I will obey Him.”

Presumption says, “God is able; therefore I can behave anyhow and He must rescue me.”

Those are not twins.

When Satan tempted Jesus to jump from the pinnacle of the temple because angels would supposedly rescue Him, Jesus answered:

«“Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.” — Matthew 4:7»

In other words: “I don't need to create unnecessary danger to prove that God can deliver me.”

Some battles are not persecution.

Some troubles are not spiritual attacks.

Some problems are simply the harvest of avoidable carelessness.

Don't enter a lion's territory unnecessarily and later organize seven nights of “Operation Lion Must Die.”

Wisdom would have saved you the microphone bill.

SIGNS OF A KASONGO CHRISTIAN

1. They Trust Their Spiritual CV

“I fast.”

“I pray.”

“I pay tithe.”

“I don't miss vigil.”

“I have been born again since 1987.”

Wonderful!

But yesterday's spiritual victories cannot replace today's dependence upon God.

Samson had defeated lions and Philistines before, but Judges 16:20 records one of Scripture's saddest moments:

«“He wist not that the LORD was departed from him.”»

He assumed yesterday's anointing guaranteed today's victory.

Never become so familiar with God's power that you stop depending on God's presence.

2. They Ignore Warnings

Kasongo Christians can rebuke everybody except themselves.

Correct them and suddenly you become “an enemy of my destiny.”

Give them wise counsel and they say, “The Holy Spirit told me.”

Sometimes we blame the devil for warnings that God actually sent through people.

Proverbs 12:15 says:

«“The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise.”»

If nobody can correct you anymore, spiritual maturity has not arrived—pride has simply obtained a church membership card.

3. They Perform Christianity More Than They Live It

There is a Christianity of microphones, vocabulary and appearances.

Everything must be announced.

“Day 17 of my 40-day fast!”

“Just finished six hours in God's presence!”

Wonderful—but heaven is not Instagram.

Jesus warned against practicing spirituality merely to be seen by people (Matthew 6:1–18).

The real question is not merely:

How long did you pray?

But:

What kind of person came out of the prayer room?

If you prayed for five hours and emerged with the same unforgiveness, arrogance, dishonesty and uncontrollable tongue, perhaps another work still needs to happen inside.

Prayer should not merely change your timetable; it should transform you.

4. They Mistake Activity for Intimacy

Jesus gave a sobering warning:

«“Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven...” — Matthew 7:21»

Notice that these were religiously active people.

Christian activity is not automatically Christian intimacy.

You can work for God while gradually drifting from God.

You can know church language without deeply knowing Christ.

Never become so busy carrying God's furniture that you forget to sit at God's feet.

HOW TO AVOID KASONGO CHRISTIANITY

Depend on God daily.

Your fasting, prayer, giving, Bible study and church attendance are disciplines of grace—not trophies of superiority.

Remain teachable.

The Holy Spirit can correct you through Scripture, circumstances and godly counsel.

Watch and pray.

Jesus said, “Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation” (Matthew 26:41). Notice He didn't say only pray. He said watch and pray. Spirituality without vigilance can become presumption.

Choose relationship above religious performance.

God is not merely interested in how impressive you look before people. He desires truth in the inward parts.

Stay humble after victories.

Your greatest spiritual danger may not come when you feel weak, but when repeated victories convince you that you cannot fall.

PROPHETIC INSIGHT

Beloved, grace is not permission for carelessness; grace is divine empowerment for faithful living.

David defeated Goliath, yet later fell where he failed to guard himself.

Peter boldly declared that he would never deny Christ, yet before the night was over, his confidence had collapsed.

Therefore, never say:

“It can never happen to me.”

Say instead:

“Lord, keep me. Give me wisdom. Order my steps. Help me remain faithful.”

The strongest Christian is not the one who boasts, “I cannot fall.”

The strongest Christian is the one who continually prays,

“Lord, hold my hand.”

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Spiritual maturity is not demonstrated by how loudly you advertise your strength, but by how deeply you recognize your dependence upon God.

Don't become Mr. Kasongo of Christianity—running confidently toward dangers that wisdom told you to avoid.

Fast.

Pray.

Study Scripture.

Live holy.

Serve faithfully.

But after doing everything, remain humble enough to say:

«“By the grace of God I am what I am.” — 1 Corinthians 15:10»

PRAYER FOR TODAY

Father, deliver me from spiritual pride and dangerous overconfidence. Give me a humble, teachable and discerning heart. Help me never to substitute religious activity for genuine intimacy with You. Give me grace to watch, pray and walk wisely. Preserve me from avoidable mistakes, and let my confidence remain in Christ alone. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Your Brother,

Prophet Dr. Abiodun Adesida
