MOMENT OF ENCOUNTER DEVOTIONAL

By Prophet Dr. Abiodun Adesida

✨ Topic: Your Marriage Is Your Responsibility — Stop Arresting Innocent In-Laws!

📖 Scripture Focus:

"And Pharaoh gave Joseph the name Zaphenath-Paneah and gave him Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On, to be his wife. And Joseph went throughout the land of Egypt." — Genesis 41:45

🔥 Prophetic Insight

Some marriages today operate like police stations. Every quarrel must have a suspect!

The mother-in-law is arrested on Monday.

The father-in-law is interrogated on Tuesday.

The village witch is summoned on Wednesday.

The pastor is blamed on Thursday.

And by Friday, everybody is guilty except the husband and wife!

Many homes are not collapsing because demons are holding emergency meetings every night. They are collapsing because the people inside the marriage have outsourced responsibility and imported excuses.

Marriage is like a garden. If weeds are growing everywhere, don't waste all your time chasing butterflies. Pick up a hoe and start working!

God never called you to manage your marriage by accusation. He called you to build it by responsibility.

💡 Joseph: The Man Who Refused Excuses

Joseph's marriage story is one of the most underrated lessons in Scripture.

At about thirty years old, Pharaoh simply handed him a wife—Asenath, daughter of Potiphera, an Egyptian priest.

Imagine some modern believers:

"Wait first! Which church does she attend?"

"What is her prayer department?"

"Has she completed forty days of fasting?"

"Who is her spiritual grandfather?"

"Can we investigate her village?"

Joseph received her, built a home, raised godly children, and fulfilled destiny.

No record of family committee meetings every weekend.

No report of "My wife's ancestors are disturbing me."

No complaint that Pharaoh gave him the wrong woman.

He simply took responsibility.

A responsible man can succeed where irresponsible people see only excuses.

🧱 Five Responsibilities That Build a Lasting Marriage

1️⃣ Spiritual Leadership

Joseph served God faithfully in Egypt and influenced his household through godly example.

If your Bible opens only during naming ceremonies and funerals, your marriage may be starving spiritually.

2️⃣ Emotional Maturity

Joseph had enough reasons to become bitter.

His brothers betrayed him.

Potiphar's wife lied against him.

Prison forgot him.

Yet he did not carry emotional luggage into his marriage.

Some people are punishing their spouse for crimes committed by former lovers twenty years ago.

Your husband is not your ex.

Your wife is not your childhood trauma.

Heal and move forward.

3️⃣ Financial Accountability

Joseph planned for seven years of abundance and seven years of famine.

A marriage cannot survive on romance alone.

Love letters are wonderful, but landlords prefer rent.

Be responsible.

Budget.

Plan.

Provide.

4️⃣ Clear Communication

Silence is not a spiritual gift in marriage.

Your spouse is not a prophet assigned to decode your mood.

Talk.

Explain.

Appreciate.

Correct with love.

Communicate before assumptions become arguments.

5️⃣ Personal Discipline

Joseph maintained integrity in Potiphar's house, in prison, and in the palace.

If you cannot control your temper, tongue, spending habits, or desires, you will struggle to lead a healthy marriage.

Self-control is cheaper than damage control.

❌ Dangerous Habits That Destroy Marriages

  • Blaming in-laws for every disagreement.
  • Comparing your spouse to somebody else's spouse.
  • Broadcasting private matters to third parties.
  • Using affection as a weapon.
  • Using money as punishment.
  • Refusing personal growth.
  • Neglecting prayer and God's Word.

✅ How to Avoid a Bad Marriage

1. Marry for Purpose, Not Performance

Beauty may attract attention.

Purpose sustains destiny.

2. Establish Healthy Boundaries

Your in-laws are relatives.

Your spouse is your covenant partner.

Know the difference.

3. Build Team Spirit

Marriage is not husband versus wife.

It is husband and wife versus the problem.

4. Take Responsibility for Your Growth

Your spouse is not your mechanic.

Stop bringing a broken attitude and expecting someone else to fix it.

Develop spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and financially.

5. Forgive Quickly

Joseph forgave brothers who sold him into slavery.

Surely you can forgive a spouse who forgot to buy tomatoes.

6. Pray More Than You Complain

Some people complain for three hours and pray for three minutes.

Reverse the formula.

Prayer changes what complaints cannot.

🛐 Prayer Point

Lord, deliver me from the ministry of blame. Give me grace to build, nurture, and protect my marriage. Remove pride, selfishness, immaturity, and every attitude that weakens my home. Make me a responsible spouse and a faithful covenant partner in Jesus' name.

📖 Confession of Faith

My marriage shall flourish under the wisdom of God. I reject blame, excuses, and irresponsibility. I receive grace to love deeply, serve faithfully, communicate wisely, and build intentionally. My home shall be a testimony of God's goodness in Jesus' name.

📌 Prophetic Declaration

I decree over you today: Every spirit of confusion, division, and irresponsibility attacking your home is broken. You shall not marry wrongly. You shall not suffer avoidable marital pain. God will grant you wisdom beyond your years, peace beyond understanding, and joy beyond explanation. Your marriage shall become a model of godliness and a legacy for generations. In Jesus' mighty name, Amen!
