THE VOICE OF THE FATHER

(OUR FATHER TOLD US: A SURE DEFENSE)

Text: Jeremiah 35:1–19

Key Verse:

"We will drink no wine: for Jonadab the son of Rechab our father commanded us..." — Jeremiah 35:6

FATHER'S DAY TAGLINE

“A father's greatest gift is not his possessions but his principles; not what he places in his children's hands, but what he plants in their hearts. Long after he is gone, his voice can still be a sure defense.”

INTRODUCTION: WHEN A VOICE BECOMES A FORTRESS

Many people look for security in money, education, influence, or strength. Yet Scripture reveals another kind of defense—the protection of godly instruction.

In Jeremiah 35, the Rechabites faced a remarkable test. Jeremiah brought them into the house of the Lord and offered them wine. The invitation came from a respected prophet and in a sacred place. Yet they refused.

Their refusal was not based on preference but on a command handed down by their father, Jonadab. Though generations had passed, his voice still governed their conduct. His instruction had become a fortress around his descendants.

THE POWER OF A FATHER'S VOICE

The greatest inheritance a father can leave is not property but principles.

Money can be spent. Land can be sold. Businesses can fail. But godly values can guide generations.

Jonadab left no record of wealth, yet his instructions survived long after his death. The Rechabites understood that wise counsel is more valuable than material possessions.

Proverbs 22:6 declares:

“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”

The greatest inheritance is not what a father leaves for his children, but what he leaves in them.

PEER PRESSURE IN HOLY PLACES

Many believers expect temptation to come from the world, but Jeremiah 35 teaches that pressure can arise even in religious environments.

The Rechabites were not invited to drink in a marketplace but in the temple.

Not everything done in a religious atmosphere carries divine approval. Convictions must be stronger than surroundings.

A person without convictions follows the crowd.

A person with convictions follows the truth.

WHEN ANOINTING MEETS INSTRUCTION

Imagine one of the Rechabites respectfully saying:

“Sir, we know you are a man of God. We respect your anointing and reputation. But our father told us not to drink wine, and we cannot do otherwise.”

They did not reject Jeremiah; they remained faithful to godly instruction.

Their response teaches a powerful lesson:

“We respect the platform, but we cannot abandon the principle.”

Today many people surrender convictions because influential voices approve what God has not approved.

The Rechabites teach us that spirituality does not cancel divine order.

NO SPIRITUALITY IS ABOVE ORDER

Jesus Himself demonstrated God's respect for order.

Though He was the Son of God, He was born through the human process and submitted to earthly parents.

"And was subject unto them." — Luke 2:51

The Creator submitted to divine order.

If Jesus honored God's order, we should not despise it.

Many desire power without accountability, ministry without mentorship, and influence without submission. Yet God consistently develops people through relationships.

Joshua had Moses.

Elisha had Elijah.

Timothy had Paul.

The disciples had Jesus.

No spirituality is above divine order.

A LESSON FOR OUR GENERATION

Today, social media often speaks louder than parents, pastors, and mentors.

Many compromise because celebrities endorse it, society celebrates it, or friends encourage it.

The pressure is everywhere.

Yet there are moments when the greatest act of faith is simply saying:

“My father taught me differently.”

“My mentor warned me about this.”

“The Word of God does not permit this.”

The Rechabites were preserved because a father's voice became stronger than public opinion.

THE BLESSING OF OBEDIENCE

While Judah ignored God's voice, the Rechabites honored their father's instruction.

God publicly commended them and promised that Jonadab's descendants would continue before Him.

Their obedience attracted divine approval.

God still honors those who preserve righteous principles and remain faithful to godly instruction.

LESSONS FOR TODAY

1. Godly instruction is a lifelong defense.

2. Convictions must be stronger than circumstances.

3. Mentorship is God's strategy for growth.

4. Obedience attracts divine approval.

5. No spirituality is above divine order.

6. Character outlives possessions.

PROPHETIC CHARGE

As we celebrate Father's Day, let us honor every father, mentor, pastor, teacher, and guardian whose voice has preserved us from error and guided us toward destiny.

If you are a father, leave your children more than your name. Give them convictions, values, wisdom, and faith.

The voice of a father may not always be the loudest voice in life, but it is often the voice that prevents the greatest regrets.

The Rechabites simply said:

“Our father told us.”

That statement preserved a family, earned God's commendation, and secured a place in Scripture.

May God raise fathers whose voices produce righteousness and children whose obedience preserves godly legacies for generations.

Amen.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, thank You for every godly voice in my life.

2. Help me to value wise counsel and mentorship.

3. Deliver me from ungodly influences and peer pressure.

4. Establish me in convictions rooted in Your Word.

5. Make me teachable and obedient.

6. Help me leave a legacy of righteousness.

7. Let Your voice remain the highest authority in my life.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

“A father's voice may fade from the ears, but when rooted in godliness, it remains a sure defense in the conscience.”

Happy Father's Day!
