MINISTRY OF COMMON SENSE Part 1

MOMENT OF ENCOUNTER DEVOTIONAL

THE MINISTRY OF COMMON SENSE

Text: Genesis 22:8

“And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.”

Devotional Message

One of the most neglected ministries in the body of Christ today is not prophecy, healing, deliverance, or evangelism. It is the Ministry of Common Sense!

Sadly, many believers are praying for miracles when what they really need is a functioning brain and a little sanctified reasoning.

Some people lock their car and pray for protection. Others leave the key in the ignition, the windows open, and then bind "the spirit of stealing" when the vehicle disappears.

Beloved, even angels get tired of some prayer requests.

In Genesis 22, Abraham and Isaac were climbing Mount Moriah. Isaac looked around and noticed something important.

The fire was there.

The wood was there.

The knife was there.

But the barbecue item was missing!

So Isaac asked the most intelligent question of the day:

“Father, where is the lamb?”

That was not unbelief. That was common sense.

Abraham did not rebuke him for being “carnal.”

He did not say, “Don't question the anointing!”

He simply replied,

“My son, God will provide.”

That answer carried both faith and wisdom. Abraham trusted God, but he did not abandon his reasoning faculties.

Unfortunately, some believers have promoted faith and demoted common sense.

They start businesses without planning.

They marry without preparation.

They spend without budgeting.

They travel without directions.

Then when trouble arrives, they announce a three-day dry fast against “household enemies.”

Meanwhile, the enemy is simply poor decision-making.

As Yoruba people would say:

“Fólórunsó rẹ, kò gbọdọ̀ fi òkùn ògèdè gún ọ̀pẹ.”

No matter how heavily anointed you are, don't attempt to climb a palm tree with a banana rope. Even miracles respect common sense!

Biblical Graduates of the School of Common Sense

1. Joseph — The First Economic Adviser

(Genesis 41:33–36)

Joseph did not merely interpret Pharaoh's dream.

He presented a storage policy, an agricultural strategy, and a national economic plan.

The miracle was revelation.

The preservation came through planning.

Lesson: God reveals; wise people prepare.

2. Moses — The Anointed Delegator

(Exodus 18:17–23)

Moses was trying to solve everybody's problems alone.

Jethro looked at him and essentially said,

“My son, you are heading toward a holy burnout.”

Moses delegated.

The ministry survived.

His sanity survived.

Lesson: Being anointed does not mean doing everything yourself.

3. The Israelites — The Obedient Survivors

(Exodus 12:21–23)

God provided protection from death.

But they still had to apply the blood to the doorposts.

Imagine someone saying,

“God knows my address. Why should I paint my door?”

That family would have learned a painful lesson.

Lesson: Faith obeys instructions.

4. Rahab — The Woman Who Thought Ahead

(Joshua 2:1–6)

Rahab protected the spies and secured the future of her family.

She recognized divine opportunity and acted wisely.

Lesson: Heaven favors those who can recognize opportunities when they arrive disguised as risks.

5. David — The Holy Actor

(1 Samuel 21:10–15)

When David's life was in danger, he pretended to be insane.

Some believers would have stood there shouting:

“I shall not die but live!”

David chose survival first and testimony later.

Lesson: Wisdom is not fear. Wisdom is survival.

6. Nehemiah — The Builder With Security Personnel

(Nehemiah 4:9,16–18)

Nehemiah prayed.

Then he posted guards.

The workers held building tools in one hand and weapons in the other.

They prayed as if everything depended on God and worked as if everything depended on them.

Lesson: Pray, but lock your gate.

7. Jesus — The Master Planner

(Luke 14:28–30)

Jesus asked:

“Who builds a tower without first counting the cost?”

Yet many people launch projects with only excitement and no calculation.

They have vision but no budget.

Dreams but no strategy.

Anointing but no arithmetic.

Lesson: Before saying "God told me," make sure your calculator agrees.

8. Paul — The Apostle of Strategic Escapes

(Acts 9:23–25; 23:6–10)

Paul escaped through a basket.

Another time, he divided his accusers by mentioning the resurrection.

The crowd started arguing among themselves while Paul quietly survived.

Lesson: Sometimes wisdom is God's miracle wearing ordinary clothes.

Final Thought

God still performs miracles.

He still opens doors.

He still makes a way where there seems to be no way.

But many doors that believers call "closed doors" are actually doors that require pushing.

Many battles blamed on witches are battles caused by carelessness.

Many delays attributed to demons are simply the consequences of poor planning.

Remember this:

Faith without common sense produces frustration.

Common sense without faith produces limitation.

But faith combined with wisdom produces extraordinary results.

God gave you the Holy Spirit, but He also gave you a brain. Use both.

Prayer Points

1. Father, baptize me with the Spirit of wisdom and sound judgment.

2. Lord, deliver me from expensive mistakes caused by foolish decisions.

3. Help me to balance faith, wisdom, and practical action.

4. Let every area of my life reflect divine intelligence and heavenly direction.

Prophetic Declaration

I decree over your life today: May God deliver you from avoidable battles, unnecessary losses, and costly mistakes. May the Lord grant you the wisdom to know what to do, when to do it, and how to do it. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Your brother,

Prophet Dr. Abiodun Adesida
